The Canggu lifestyle
Canggu is the IT place to be amongst Bali expats, unofficial Bali residents and repeat visitors to the island of Gods. Why Canggu? you ask. Why not? we say.
Canggu is set away from the unbearable traffic of Seminyak and is an aesthetically spectacular area. Close to Bali’s best beaches (Echo, Batu Bolong and Tanah Lot, to name a few), surrounded by Bali’s best cafes, and hedged by endless rice field vistas, you just can’t pick a better spot to call home in Bali. Even if it’s just for a couple of weeks.
The swanky dining and nightlife scene in Seminyak might be hard to part with, but it’s nice to take it easy in Bali and experience a slower pace of life that’s utterly fabulous at the same time. After all, the dining scene of Seminyak is still only a quick scooter ride away.
Eating out in cafes and restaurants in Canggu is a casual affair. Here, you’ll find healthy juice bars, Western warungs and Asian noodle bars on Jalan Pantai Berawa; fantastic cafes are everywhere (note this down: Crate Café, Milk and Madu). Everyone’s favourite is the unbeatable Betelnut, where the burgers are epic and the house salad is overflowing with goodness, all for less then US$5. And no, we can’t stop sensationalizing a salad when it’s that amazing.
And you might want to trade your spa and shopping outfit in Canggu for a surfboard and yoga attire. A surfing lesson in Batu Bolong is an unmissable experience, and a few yoga sessions at Desa Seni and Samadi Bali will change your life.
Then, if you want to ride with the Canggu hipster crowd, head to Deus for a midweek beverage and – if you’re there on a Tuesday – a free tattoo. A Friday session at Old Man’s is perfect for live music, remembering that a couple of cocktails are completely obligatory. And really good fun.

Villa Sabana looks like a quintessential Seminyak villa. You know the style. Bright pastel accent walls, cushions everywhere and immaculately placed furniture. Facebook worthy at every turn, #nofilter. But it’s located in Pererenan, just beyond Canggu. Which actually makes it trendier because Pererenan is the newest ‘up and coming’ area to live in Bali. Pererenan is a beautiful and rustic locale that lives in Canggu’s shadow, yet is still theoretically considered Canggu – if you know what we mean. It’s the next in-demand district, even less built-up than Canggu but still close to the bars, beaches and cafes in Echo Beach and Batu Bolong.

Semarapura means ‘Temple of Peace’ in Sanskrit. This luxury villa is located somewhere between the famous and breathtakingly beautiful Tanah Lot temple, and Canggu and Pererenan beach. Being just a little further away from the heart of Canggu affords you out of this world ocean views and a private tropical garden.
The villa compound is laid out just like a resort, with over 5,000 square meters of oceanfront heaven. #9 Puri Bawana – space, character and perfect for events
If relaxing in a private bale that floats above a private pool against a peaceful backdrop of tropical forests and rice paddies is your idea of a perfect holiday in Bali, then here’s a resort style villa in Canggu that’ll make you feel right at home. If home was a private resort, that is.

Plunked right on the edge of Berawa beach with direct beach access from the enormous infinity pool, Villa Sankara is a stunning five bedroom villa located behind the Canggu Club. It’s a little pricier than the other villas on the list. But in return you get space, style, and a lot of it. Between the garden miniature forest that sits around the bedroom suites and main house, the massive indoor-outdoor living spaces and the monumental poolside, there’s plenty of space for the kids to run around or the grown ups to host a banging party.
What’s nice about staying in Villa Sankara is that here, Bali comes to you. On the stretch of beach right in front of the villa, beach hawkers selling beach snacks and local delights set up shop at sundown.
