Gourmet pleasures are no longer considered a luxury while traveling in Asia. Especially not in Bali, which has developed into an international gastronomic hub every world capital should be envious of. With a plethora of national cuisines from all over the world, flaring with Michelin stars and world class chefs, no hungry traveller will be left wanting.

Even those with a weakness for patisserie products are in a safe heaven.

To our surprise, there are quite a few quality patisseries in Bali. And we’re talking about real patisseries. The kind that offer a range of Danish deserts, croissants, brioches, meringue swirls, madeleine cookies, a large choice of baguettes and healthy breads. The whole kit and caboodle.

If there’s a person out there that doesn’t go weak at the knees over a plain, homemade croissant, we’d like to meet them. The layered butter, the yeast risen dough, the golden colour, the crescent shaped little pieces of warm heaven. All you need is a quick dunk in coffee, or lashings of strawberry marmalade and you’re sweet tooth is swooning.

Indulging in pastries, hey? Such joie de vivre!

So here is our official list of top patisseries in Bali, with a complete critiquing of their capabilities dans le département de croissants!

1. The Harvest

The Harvest is one of the latest additions to the world of patisseries / bakeries in Bali. It’s a refined national chain that specializes in cakes, pastries and ice creams, with a chilled out vibe that will not disappoint. It’s located on the Sunset road just after the roundabout in the direction of Seminyak. It has a large following, so don’t be surprised if you do not find a parking spot. The Harvest is a large restaurant decorated in an industrial style, bringing yet another cosmopolitan touch to Bali. Downside: they open at 10:00 a.m. Who can wait that long? Croissants are large, perfectly textured and not too greasy. At 7,000 Rp a pop, you can’t go wrong.

2. Bali Bakery

Bali Bakery is a favorite meeting place for business swarves and tourists alike. There are several locations in Bali, including Jl. Raya Kuta, Seminyak Square and Renon Denpasar. They all offer great pastries and coffee but also a large salad bar, a range of Italian food and quality healthy breads.

Usually the patisserie department has big discounts on religious holidays such as Easter, Christmas and Idul Fitri. Downside: sometimes they run out of croissants and only make fresh ones every other day. Croissants are a bit smaller, but a nice golden colour and delightfully crunchy. A bit on the greasy side, so watch your weight. Moving up the scale to 10,000 Rp – still chicken’s feed, let’s face it.

3. Cafe Moka

Cafe Moka is a French owned patisserie (legit – yeehaa!) with great breakfast combos, sandwiches, quiches and mouth watering French desserts. It’s very cozily decorated and, as you might have guessed, a meeting point for the French crowd. There are several venues strategically distributed in all parts of Bali: Ubud, Jimbaran, Seminyak and Sanur. Perhaps a day of Moka hopping is in order? All have excellent healthy, fresh baked bread. The croissants are large, well layered and not too greasy. Downside: sometimes they’re too dry. 11,000 Rp each. Squeal!

4. Carrefour Supermarket on Sunset Road

The large French supermarket chain gone international, Carrefour, is located on the Sunset road in Seminyak. While many other Carrefour supermarkets are jam packed with local brands, having very little international products available, here in Bali, it’s quite the opposite. With a large population of French now calling Bali home, their national brand decided to give them support where they need it most – providing patisserie goodies.

Inside the supermarket itself is the bread department with a range of 20 or 30 healthy brown breads, which are made daily. You can also find mini Danishes, quiches and Madeleines among many, many other things. Croissants here are large and delicious, and often have promo offers such as “buy three for the price of one”. Which actually insinuates “buy 30 for the price of ten”, if you’re mind works anything like ours. The average price is usually about 10,000 Rp. Downside: it’s a supermarket.

5. Monsieur Spoon

Monsieur Spoon is a boutique French bakery on the rise, with venues in Seminyak, Kerobokan and Canggu. They are the only patisserie that offers online order and delivery in the south part of Bali: Umalas, Canggu or Oberoi Seminyak. What more can one ask for than freshly baked pastries delivered just a few steps from your bed? Monsieur Spoon serves French style breakfasts with viennoiseries, a baguette with jam and coffee for 150k for two. It’s a bit steep for Bali, but it’s hard to put a price tag on a hearty and nourishing start to the day. A gourmet investment is always a good investment. The croissants are mid sized and taste pretty goof. Downside: it only exists in the southern part of Bali.
